Due to our demographic circumstances of distance and population, mail order is an essential and integral part of our business.
16 Mt Leyshon Road Charters Towers is the Headquarters for Outback Traders. Administration, storage and mail order distribution is operated from this premises, whilst our shop is at 23 Gill Street, in the retail core of Charters Towers, Queensland.
Our Mail Order business services the entire continent. At present the bulk of our clients are associated with the cattle industry and the sports of campdrafting and rodeo. In more recent times we have received enquires from urban people who want western fashion. We are also developing an international market with customers from New Zealand, United States and United Kingdom.
Some History
Charters Towers was established in 1872 following the discovery of gold.
During these days Charters Towers boomed and prospered and was the only town in Australia with a rural Stock Exchange.
The town was always considered to be the “Capital” of outback Queensland.
Mining and cattle are still the major industry producers for Charters Towers today.
The town now has a population of about 10 000 people and is the north’s gateway to the west.
People within a 550-mile radius of Charters Towers frequently visit our shop. Although this seems a vast local area, the percentage of people per square kilometre is much smaller than in other countries.
Big sky, cattle country and wide-open spaces!
Most of the items we sell are connected with station life or the associated equestrian sports such as campdrafting or rodeo.
